Title: You Can Read Me Anything
Written for: [ profile] kindness_says
Fandom: Gilmore Girls
Pairing: Jess/Rory
Prompt: "You can read me anything"
Spoilers: None
Summary: Rory analyzes Jess’s reading habits.
Notes: I personally ship Jess/Rory… Not as much as I ship Luke/Lorelai, but Jess/Rory is my favorite Rory ship. That being said, I don’t recall ever writing them, or ever coming close to being able to try. So this was a challenge. Hope you like it. Also, this prompt was ready to kill me because I legitimately had no idea what to do with it, and I just hope you like it! (It's also been years since I wrote anything Gilmore Girls. Yikes. Anyway. :)

“I thought you said you didn’t read much.”
“Ah, what is much?”

If Rory could read people like she read books, she often thought, her life would be much easier. She could read the obvious emotions; she knew how to appropriately analyze, assess, and react to situations as they arose. But as a teenager, she often found herself wondering about the intricacies of human behavior.

When they were younger, Jess was one of the people Rory sought to analyze. She was convinced that, even though others couldn’t or wouldn’t see it, there was a different Jess under the rough exterior. It would just take a few years of peeling the layers to find.

Now, she watches him sitting on the couch, a book in his hands. He’s resting his elbow on the arm of the couch, with one foot tucked beneath him and the other resting on the coffee table. He turns to face her. “What are you doing?”

“What?” Rory reaches for the remote and turns the channel.

“You were watching me read.”

“I was not.”

“Were too.”

Rory sighed. “You were doing the whole, ‘I disapprove of this line’ thing.”

“The what?”

“You know, where you shake your head and mutter the line under your breath? And you kind of chuckle to yourself in some sort of disbelief?”

“I do?”

“You may as well read it out loud. You know I love mocking anything and everything I can.”

She can tell he’s a little embarrassed, but he has no reason to be. She’d tell him she finds it endearing, but he’s still not one for compliments.

“You really want me to do a dramatic reading of this?”

“You can read me anything.”

He begins to read aloud, pacing the room as he gains some rhythm. His tone soon changes appropriately with each dramatic action. She locks eyes with him at one point when he checks to make sure she hasn’t gone anywhere. He pauses for a moment, smiling at her, before he continues on.

If this was the Jess beneath the layers, Rory could get used to this sort of thing.
